Below is a quick overview about choosing a suitable router.
There are several types
of router and the one you require will depend upon several factors.
1. The type of Internet connection you have either ADSL using a standard telephone
line or DSL via a cable company such as Virgin Media.
2. Weather you require to connect
wireless devices to it and if so the type and speed of the devices you wish to connect.
In addition to the above there are some routers that provide VOIP (Voice over Internet
Protocol) services. These are mainley used in business environments at the moment
but are becoming increasingly popular in homes.
With regard to wireless connectivity
there are several standards which dictate the speed and range of the connection.
The two most common currently in use being 802.11n offering up to 300 mbit/s and
802.11b providing up to 54 mbit/s however you do need to take account of the devices
you wish to connect as they may not support the later faster standards.
Some manufacturers
have devolved their own proprietary standards to increase speed but these are only
comparable with their own specific adapters.
Range varies between units depending
upon antenna configuration and equally importantly the operating environment and
placement of the router however 802.11n technology boasts greater range over the
maximum of 100m stated by 802.11n standards.
